“A Bite is success to the angler, no matter what fishing method employed or the species sought. The more Bites - the greater the success and the greater the opportunity there is for the angler to catch a fish. This simple principle defines success in all fishing methods. Be a Bite fisherman. The Unknown Smallmouth Bass River

Some of the rivers that come to mind when talking about smallmouth bass fishing are rivers like Maine's Androscoggin River, West Virginia's New River, the John Day River in Oregon and Minnesota's Upper Mississippi. Healthy populations of smallmouths and prime habitat are what characterize any excellent bass... [Read More]

Understanding the size difference in lures (beginner's question)
May 11, 2008 - 10:42 PM - by jbu311
Hi all,

A book told me to use different lures for the same particular creek and for the same type of fish (brown trout). Why does it seem like half of the baits it suggests are less than 1cm and the other half of baits are large like streamers and wooly buggers? Is it like bass fishing where a large bass will take either small or large baits? Or is it that the book is telling me to use small baits for tiny trout and the large baits for the mammoth trouts?

It just doesn't seem to make sense to me. Please help me out.

How to fish a dry fly (beginner's question)
May 11, 2008 - 10:34 PM - by jbu311
Hi all,

I'm new to fly fishing. After I've cast a dry fly, am I supposed to just let it float downstream without reeling in, except for maybe twitching the fly? Is there ever a case where I'd want to reel it in?

How about nymphs and streamers? Do I reel those in? If so, what type of retrieve?

Thanks in advance,
jbu

Fishing fast moving water (beginner's question)
May 11, 2008 - 10:32 PM - by jbu311
Hi all,

I've only been fly fishing once before, so I'm still trying to figure out what types of water are going to hold fish.

Will fast moving water hold trout? I went to a place called Sugar Hollow, and I didn't see anyone fishing there, and I didn't see any fish there (maybe because the water was moving too fast for it to them to be visible), so I'm wondering if these areas of fast moving waters will hold many fish, or if I should just skip them and go to the pools of water or areas of slower moving water. When I say the water's fast, I mean the rushing of the water is pretty loud and my fly floats down river maybe 1ft per second (maybe? i'm kinda bad at estimating it). Also, the place where I'm fishing is very rocky.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks in advance,
jbu

New reel help...
May 11, 2008 - 9:01 PM - by sesro1978
Hi-

I'm in the market for a new fly reel after spending several years with my Orvis Battenkill disc drag (recently this reel has one heck of line backlash problem when I'm stripping line out...I'd hate to think what would happen if I had a big fish on...).

I have a Sage FLi 5-wt. rod and would like to spend $200.00 or less on a new reel. I mainly fish for trout (small brookies to 2 - 3 pound 'bows/browns). Important highlights would be reliable drag, no backlash, tough finish (I can be hard on my equipment), smooth "feel" when in use...

If you need more info. please let me know :-)

Thanks for any help!!

~Seth

P.S. Reel "click" doesn't bother me when reeling or stripping line...

I have seen these kicking around in forums, but have seen no reviews. Does anyone have any input? The look nice with the LA design, and they look even nicer with the price tag attatched to them. Any feedback>>???

Proverbial Newbie Rod Selection for Michigan
May 11, 2008 - 3:56 PM - by pneumatic
This is my first post here. However, this is no indication of my addiction to fishing and the general outdoors. I do lots of fishing and I would like to move into fly fishing. I expect to be fly fishing for the rest of my healthy life.

As I have already squandered a good deal of money on my other fishing ventures, I am hoping - with proper guidance - to increase my bang for buck. I realize that this is frowned upon for various reasons both real and imaginary. But, in the face of limited financing, hopeless addiction and an appreciation of quality, I would like to see what is possible.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out what will allow me to cover most of the gamut that I have available here in Michigan. I will say right off the bat that I already realize that I won't be banking 30 pound salmon with the same rod that I'll be using for panfish.

To the point:

Primary duty is going to be rainbow and brown trout in... [Read More]

Orlando Florida Report 5/11/08
May 11, 2008 - 1:52 PM - by Capt Chris M
During the past two weeks, our temperatures have been pleasant and the bait is continuing to return to the Lagoons. Water levels have risen considerably giving the fish plenty of places to explore that they have been unable to access for quite some time.

Last week, I took a fishing holiday down to Biscayne Bay near Miami with friend and fellow guide, Capt. Keith Kalbfleisch. We had one day of nice weather but saw very few bonefish and only one permit. The next two days, we battled high winds and clouds. The bonefish were nowhere to be found but we did have some excellent action with the sharks catching them on
fly and spin gear from 20 to over 100 pounds. We sight fished them in clear shallow water and they provided us with some spectacular drag creaming runs and jumps.

The day after returning from the trip, it was back to Mosquito Lagoon with Jim and Mick from Britain. The father and son team began the day with a double hookup on redfish. [Read More]

Dave is a pioneer fly fishing explorer who has found many of the best angling adventure values.

You don't have to be wealthy to go to the Bahamas and catch Bonefish on the fly rod. For $1500, you can stay beach side for six nights, you can have a guide take you out 2 days, you can eat well, rent a car, and still have money left over for a case of Kalik.

First you have to fly to Freeport. I fly from Lauderdale via Continental ($310 round trip, takes an hour) I am met at the Freeport Airport by my guide, Bernard Bevans bahamasbonefishing.com Bernard takes me to the... [Read More]
