Abel Dancing Bears Grateful Dead Series Reels

Following the success of their individually hand-painted Grateful Dead ® ‘Steal Your Face’ logo reels in 2013 the group’s iconic ‘Dancing Bears’ design has been licensed by Abel as the second pattern in the series.

Calling all Deadhead anglers…

As a leader in machining technology Abel wanted to continue the special tradition of the Grateful Dead reels by utilizing a new machining procedure that CNC mills the Dancing Bears .020” into the aluminium frame at a speed of 40,000 rpm before filling them in with an epoxy paint, resulting in an ultra-clean image with a texture that can be felt as well as seen.

Set against the ‘outdoorsy’ feeling forest green tie-dye background requested by the band the limited edition of 250 reels is likely to sell out just as quickly as the first series did!

DAFAB ? Do Anything For A Buck ? The sequel never seems to be as good as the original

fan of that logo, bigger fan of the SYF, but both designs would have worked better on a reel if they were a little more subtle (IMHO) or the bodies of the bears were colored with different trout skin patterns

These are definitely dreadful in my opinion. However, in the collector world, sometimes the ugly ducklings end up being the most valuable for the simple fact that they didn't sell well when new; there are fewer around.

You know how many grilled cheese you need to sell in the parking lot of a show to afford this reel?? I'd rather buy a couple sheets of acid and put on 5-8-77 Barton Hall concert. I'd definitely get more enjoyment than some over priced yuppie reel.

Not sure what this well known manufacturer is trying to do with their image. This looks like something that you would hang over your grandson's crib for a mobile. Are they trying to appeal to the child in every fan of this reel or do they think yuppie children will scoop these up for their collections.
plecain on 18/08/2014 15:11:13
...yuppie children will scoop these up for their collections Bingo. Bingo. (Had to say it twice to get to the 10 character minimum)

Nobody will slay Abel in a fit of jealousy over this
moucheur2003 on 18/08/2014 15:33:48
I don't want it unless they throw in a matching set of nippers.

Yeah. Not sure why they had to follow up the Dead Head skull graphic with the dancing bears. The design committee must be dead heads? Despite my opinion of some of these graphics, I guarantee they will sell.

I think they dropped the ball on this one, good idea, bad execution. I'll still hold out for the Dark Star. Did shotgunfly ever get his SYF reel? milt

For the price, it should come with a hit and a bootleg CD.
guest59 on 18/08/2014 18:33:49
This may be THE best hero shot of all time!! LOL!
itchmesir on 18/08/2014 18:35:32
For the price, it should come with a hit and a bootleg CD. At over $1000 it better be Jerry's right middle finger.

I'd have paid money to sit in on the meeting where this was discussed/approved.

Does the large arbor reel have a weed stash built in? I would imagine that the small arbor reel will have much smaller compartment, with a nicely machined spoon, for your cocaine. WWJD. What would Jerry do?
wineshark on 20/12/2014 06:01:55
Beyond stupid, that's why it's popular.
coug on 21/12/2014 02:14:00
I love it. I would have been all over that 20 or 30 years ago during my Dead phase. I am not going to get one, but completely understand those that do. To each their own.

I prefer my Abels in guide finish black please.
lv2nymph on 23/12/2014 00:28:23
At over $1000 it better be Jerry's right middle finger. Well they seem to be pulling off selling $50.00 nippers, they gotta figure why not a $1000.00 reel with bears on it. I say more power to them.... They exist to make money after all, And there's always someone willing to give it to them...
Bigfly on 23/12/2014 17:31:59
I followed for a summer......and it might be fun to fish.... But, a thousand dollars would be better spent on an Olympic peninsula trip.......
