Allen Fly Fishing Xa Fly Rod 9' 4#
Allen Fly Fishing describe their Xa fly rod as being of "medium fast action and the most versatile "workhorse" of the line-up." It has been their best selling rod for a couple of years now, and for 2013 it has benefited from a new finish and components while leaving the action untouched.
The Xa series is about versatility. If you're the type of angler who likes to switch tactics, and don't like packing multiple rods, the Xa was designed with you in mind. We also offer several 10' models for maximum line control when nymphing.

After testing their entry-level Compass rod earlier this year and being pleased with the results, I had been looking forward to getting the Xa out on the water and finally took it along on a day trip to investigate some new trout waters I had not fished before. The mix of small lakes would be the perfect place to test out the 9' 4# model I had for review.
My first impression out of the rod tube was that this was a very handsome rod in its livery of navy blue and I was pleased to see it had both line-up dots on the blank ends as well as a keeper ring - double plus!
Allen Fly Fishing claim a AAA quality cork handle and I would not disagree. It looked and felt of good quality with very little filler and composite cork ends which are a little tougher and resist chipping which is good.
I was fishing with a couple of friends who also tried the rod out and we all agreed we enjoyed casting and fishing with it. With a medium fast action it is not poker stiff but gives just nicely resulting in a clean, crisp feel when casting. The action shows well when playing a fish with the tip flexing down towards the middle to protect light tippets in the case of this 4# but with plenty in reserve nearer the butt for any larger fish.
We caught plenty of rainbow and brown trout at several different lakes up to about 2lb and the rod handled them all brilliantly. We even had a try at a carp lake for something different but sadly work upstream had muddied it and the fish were sulking. Never mind, a great reason to head back and give the Xa another workout.
I could not really find fault with the rod. For $229 this is a great piece of gear for the price.
