It's a S & W 629 with a 6" barrel. As far as the first shot, I thought your goal was to immobilize rather than hope for a head shot in a very thick skulled animal. I caught a glimpse of a charging grizz coming at the camera and it's a fast animal. If the head shot is iffy why wouldn't a shoulder shot not be preferred? I could surmise that missing a head shot would give you either shoulder and the chest 75% of the time vs. the shoulder alone. I could not find bear targets to practice on so I'm using USPSA & NRA targets. I should be practicing my casts instead but I do want to remember these trips as well. I hope it's evident though that, at least with me, one doesn't just pick up the 'roscoe' and head out on the trail and expect to be competent. Just like heading to a blue ribbon river without having the right flies, rod or gear-and practice.
