I've seen some 3 weights that have more backbone than some 4's, so I don't think that's the issue.

But, what is true is the longer it takes to land a fish the greater the impact will be on the fish. When using lighter rods on bigger fish you can't be worried about losing the fish. You have to be aggressive and bend the rod form the mid section to the butt end. Don't worry, the fish won't break the rod.
