Gary, you are correct that you need to know the water very well. I used to do a lot of night fishing in PA when I was a kid and we would normally only hit 3 or 4 runs in a night. you not only need to know where you can and cannot wade, but kowing where trees are to avoid snaggin on backcasts is important. We didn't use headlamps to avoid spooking trout.
