Don't pull down on the line like you're trying to double haul. Most times, I just hold the line in my right hand and set the hook with the rod in my left.
No need for any more force than that...trout don't have super tough mouths and you aren't bass fishing so no need for a super strong hook set.
Fredaevans is right, just need the line to be taut and use the rod to set the hook.
Good luck with those brookies. Even the little guys put up a good fight and they aren't particularly picky when it comes to flies!
