For gills, my fave fish with a flyrod, I use 6' of a 4X tapered leader with a tippet ring, then I use 2' of 7X fluorocarbon. I recently purchased a 40M spool from Trout Magnet (only $6 and I like it better than the more expensive stuff)
You can use thick tippet, but I'm totally convinced that the thin 2lb flouro makes the small flies move better in the water! The thick line drags the fly in the water, the thin line lets the fly jump up and down when you strip it.
