I also think your game plan sounds fine. I like the fact that you will buy something from the local shop, If I may, I would suggest that it be a dozen or so of the "HOT" patterns for the water your going to be fishing. That way you have some idea of what you need to tie for future trips to that water.

Another thought.....Take time to watch the water often, not just when you get there, you probably already knew this.
