I will have to test it out (the flying purple trout slayer?). I made a 2-bit hooker/long pheasant tail that was the same color scheme and it worked well.
The thin blue stripes of herl near the eye have such great natural colors.
The #16 size, dark, skinny, copper john/PT/2bit style stonefly nymph is my go to fly for boulder creek if I have not fished it for a while, it generally works year round. The #18-22 sizes and thread midges start working great in town when it freezes nightly. Last winter the bigger browns (for Boulder Creek) were taking tiny little #22-24 black thread/herl midges through the coldest part of winter.

The white soft hackle and tail was a feather that escaped from a throw pillow last night! (obsessive fly tier must put to use)
