Hi Dan.
Bad news,as stl geoff has mentioned The Surge protectors aren't that efficient,they don't always work,there is always warnings advising people to disconnect all Electronic Gear during Electrical Storms,we have quite a few Electrical storms over here also,over the past 6 or so years I've had 3 or 4 Power Supplies fail,not all from Power Surges.
There is a Power Supply tester available for about $10-$20.
