I would say that 99% of the time when I am trout fishing I use a tandem setup.

I will typically look at what is in the water first, then tie on what fly mimics what I've seen in the water.

One setup I've used numerous times is a size 18 Pheasant Tail nymph on the very end & a size 12-14 Maylfy. This works very well on the trout rivers I fish in West Michigan.

I must admit the first time I heard about tandem flys I was not to sure, but since I've been using them it WORKS.
