Default Griffith Gnat - foam underbody possible?

Hi,

I'm working through Craven's fly tying book in order -- which he suggests for beginners. The 1st pattern is the brassie, and I'm getting better at it the more I tie.

Another simple pattern looks like the G-gnat. I've not fished many dry flies and was wondering if one could tie a very small strip of black foam under the peacock herl to avoid having to use floatant..? Anyone done this?

I know that the brassie and black beauty can imitate midge nymphs, so I figured I'd learn the adult as well.

Thanks!
