Not as much of a joke as you think. In the 70's they had a satellite mistake sun hitting the ground through holes in the clouds as heat blooms (result of missle launch). They spun everything up for the full retalliatory strike. Had the bombers scrambling, subs getting ready to launch, missles ready to go and a Soviet E-4 discovered the error and stopped WW3 with mere seconds to go.
