In 50+years of fishing, I've only had 1 rod break. And, that one was entirely my fault. I was fishing for Steelhead, and hooked into a large Chinook (who knew they both liked the same streamers?). In any case, once I hooked it, the old 6wt Fenwick HMG did a the bend down to the water, then snapped in two.
It did manage to get the fish to me before snapping, but it was snapped with authority!
