Default Man, I love RMNP!!

Okay....backpacking season is officially upon us. I usually like to do some shakedown cruises in early summer to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park to "wake up the legs" and catch some greenback cutts. Greenbacks are an easily caught backcountry trout and let's face it.....they're just darn pretty to look at. So off I went to explore yet another RMNP high lake.

I had day-hiked to this lake in 2011 and the action was overwhelming......endless greenbacks bit the end of my tippet all afternoon. I've been itching to get back ever since. I had a week open in early July, so I thought I should make the climb up there again and explore the area in earnest. I was able to procure a nice two-night reservation on short notice so off I went. The lake harbors an extensive outlet and inlet system, so I obviously concentrated my time there. But I did catch a few beauties along the wonderful shelf that exists all along the perimeter of the lake.

Long story short, I tore it up y'all!!!! The greenbacks were much bigger than expected and I think I have found my favorite new lake in the Park. It's not easily accessible, which I believe keeps the fishing fantastic. The moral of the story - keep exploring while in the vast expanses of RMNP. The greenback fisheries have existed for many years now. There are some incredible lakes secreted away............KEEP EXPLORING!!!!
