A lot depends on how you plan to fish it. Here in the PNW skagits seem pretty common for winter steelhead on the west side of the cascades because they need to get the fly down. Over here on the dry side our season starts in a few weeks and it is all floating lines so scandi's and short- or mid-belly lines are most common. I am far, far from being an expert at this, but I have moved from scandi to a little longer heads (45-55'). Less stripping. 50' of shooting line going out on a cast means a lot of stripping to get it back for the next one!
