AH! Another excellent point. One of the biggest changes I noticed from hiking in the Appalachians back east and here in the mountain west is the amount of stream crossings you encounter.

I think most backpackers change socks after a fording? I bring along a pair of Croc's... cheap, light... I like to keep my boots dry if at all possible.
