You mean like the 1770's? Hell my great granddad used to use live duckling on Lake Okeechobee and the rim canal for bass. The game was you'd buy a few duckling, tape hook to them and set them on a little shingle with a string and let the current float them out, then jerk the shingle out from under them and wait for the bass. Now that's seriously old school and a bit hard core for me, but its a technique that's been around forever.

As to the OP? I think any variant of a good frog pattern in yellow and brown with some marabou might be a place to start.
