That is kind of a tough question, but here are some ideas. I try to match the hatch where I'm fishing if I can see anything coming off. If I'm stillwater fishing it is mostly chronomids, Callibaetis nymphs/emergers, damsel flies, at day break or sunset I might try streamers. If on a stream and nothing is rising then I will probably go with hare's ear, pheasant tail, prince nymph or Copper John. Early in the season I might try a stonefly pattern.
