Default Beginner

Hi all, I used to fish a lot as a kid and have come to a place in my life where I need an outdoor hobby. I would like to give fly fishing a try. My wife used to do it with her grandfather and she said it was a lot of fun. My primary fishing grounds would be the mountains of NC (Boone area). I'm looking for what kind of setup would be good for this area. I don't have a lot of money to spend (400-500) total. I also would do some lake (Lake Gaston) and small pond fishing as well. I've read a little and it seems a long rod would be best for a beginner but that may not work well in the mountains. I've noticed there is a tremendous amount of info on this and I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction with rod and reel setup.

Thanks
