It had to be done....

Posted 05-22-2012 at 12:23 AM by ak allen

On a more positive note, after dinner I got all the trees cut down that were in the path of the circle drive I'm working in putting in. Now I just gotta chop them up, stack the wood, and haul away the brush. The on to stump removal, and laying rock. Should make...

Chatanika River!!

Posted 05-19-2012 at 02:57 AM by ak allen

So I got out tonight with a friend. He took me out to a river I had not been on before, the Chatanika. The Chatanika is normally a clear to slightly tannic river with good flow, it is part of the Yukon river drainage basin.

Today the river was still running high from melt off and was pretty dirty. Only had 2 bites in the 3 1/2 hours we were there, but I landed one of them, a 12" Grayling. It just felt great to be out on a river again. And my cast was doing a ton better,...

Today was the day for the appointment.

So the ran their tests, and fitted me for glasses. That puff of air thing is annoying to say the least. I found out my vision...

New lines

Posted 05-15-2012 at 06:20 PM by ak allen

Today I went down to the fly shop and got line for the new rod & reel. Decided on Scientific Angler's Mastery Series Textured GPX in 9wt, due to the fact that I will be using this for larger fish, (Pike, Salmon, Steelhead) Also picked up a new line for my 5wt rig. Last night when I took it out I noticed the bad shape it was in.

When I got back home I spooled up the F1 and got all of that taken care of. Now I just need to get the furled leaders in and make some tippets for...

It's been 10 days....

Posted 05-14-2012 at 04:48 AM by ak allen

It's been 10 days since I had surgery to biopsy 2 masses, and repair a hernia. I hadn't got out fishing at all this year do to work, and waiting for everything to thaw out. So tonight I had to give it a shot.

I went down to the slough (pronounced "slew") anywhere else it would be called a "creek" or "river" but not in Alaska! It's the closest possibility for wetting a line for me. Normally this area is crowded with dads teaching their kids to...
