Tarpon Day 5

Posted 06-23-2011 at 08:54 PM by Davo (Davo's Fly Angling Adventures)

This day seemed doomed from the start. Since it has become so crowded out on the flats near Ocean Reef this year we decided to head out earlier than usual. We decided on the schedule change in order to get on our favorite flat. Over the last 7 yrs of this trip we have figured out the moves of the Tarpon during the tidal changes on this particular flat. Until this year we have been one of only two boats fishing the flats in this area. This year there have been many boats out there. We have been beaten...

Tarpon Day 4

Posted 06-20-2011 at 09:14 PM by Davo (Davo's Fly Angling Adventures)

I'd love to tell everyone it was a stellar day, but that was not the case. Headed out at 7:00AM and found the best flats already full of boats. Very disconcerting to say the least so it was time to explore new fishing grounds.

We headed south from Ocean Reef in search of a place to intercept some north bound fish. We ended up staking out 3 good spots. However the cloud cover limited visibility to 30ft or less due to the glare on the water. Even with polarized glass seeing sets of fish...

Tarpon Day 3

Posted 06-19-2011 at 05:49 PM by Davo (Davo's Fly Angling Adventures)

Well it turned into just a lazy Fathers Day for my Dad and I. We slept in and went out to breakfast. After sharing a bite to eat it was over to the Orvis shop to pick up Dad's new Mirage VII Shallow reel to go on his Helios 12wt. Also picked up a few new flies to try on the picky Tarpon of Ocean Reef Club.

We were hoping that by the time we finished goofing around the cloud cover may have cleared and we could head for the flats. No such luck!! But we did not let bad visibility stop...

Day two of annual Tarpon quest yeilds no joy!!

Posted 06-18-2011 at 02:37 PM by Davo (Davo's Fly Angling Adventures)

Well we got up at 6:30AM and had a quick cup a coffee. Then we loaded up and head to the dock. We ended up being the first ones out on the flats probably due to the early morning cloud cover making visibility non existent. In tarpon fishing spotting the fish is the first key to success. But we were able to once again stake out our favorite flat for getting in front of north bound sets of fish.

For the first couple of hours the visibility remained difficult but we were able to spot a...

Day one of Tarpon in the books

Posted 06-17-2011 at 09:20 PM by Davo (Davo's Fly Angling Adventures)

Well I made it to the Keys with no problems. After a good nights sleep we headed out to one of our top flats for the day. Luckily we were first to arrive and able stake out right where the Tarpon always cross this flat to drop in to the creek.

The first few hours were very slow. Only two set showed there backs and were way inside on the flat with no hope of cutting them off.

After a few hours the procession of sets was kicked off when a nice full grown beast free jumped...
