New lines

Today I went down to the fly shop and got line for the new rod & reel. Decided on Scientific Angler's Mastery Series Textured GPX in 9wt, due to the fact that I will be using this for larger fish, (Pike, Salmon, Steelhead) Also picked up a new line for my 5wt rig. Last night when I took it out I noticed the bad shape it was in.

When I got back home I spooled up the F1 and got all of that taken care of. Now I just need to get the furled leaders in and make some tippets for...

It's been 10 days....

It's been 10 days since I had surgery to biopsy 2 masses, and repair a hernia. I hadn't got out fishing at all this year do to work, and waiting for everything to thaw out. So tonight I had to give it a shot.

I went down to the slough (pronounced "slew") anywhere else it would be called a "creek" or "river" but not in Alaska! It's the closest possibility for wetting a line for me. Normally this area is crowded with dads teaching their kids to...

Why are Salmon Flies so Gaudy in Color?

That was a question posted to the thread I ran in the Alaska forum threads about Pattern Productivity. When I tried to answer the question my post turned out to be a little long winded so I have copied it to here. I'm going to add a couple pictures here to help in making some of the things I said more colorful also.

Snake River Trip 04/31/2012

Greg and I hit the river for the 5th and final float for spring 2012. Compared to the previous day the weather was fantastic. Bright sunny cloudless skies all day. Temperatures ranging from upper 60's to low 70's depending on the wind.

Being such a beautiful Saturday everyone and their brother headed for the river. Thanks to the lovely warm weather the river was blown out both above and below the stretch we were floating. This resulted in a huge fiberglass hatch. At the put in the traffic...
