Why are Salmon Flies so Gaudy in Color?

Posted 05-03-2012 at 01:49 PM by Hardyreels

That was a question posted to the thread I ran in the Alaska forum threads about Pattern Productivity. When I tried to answer the question my post turned out to be a little long winded so I have copied it to here. I'm going to add a couple pictures here to help in making some of the things I said more colorful also.

Snake River Trip 04/31/2012

Posted 04-24-2012 at 11:21 AM by Davo (Davo's Fly Angling Adventures)

Fourth Float of 2012

The weather man was just a bit off the mark as to how the day would unfold. Despite this it was a good day of fishing. Started out with full cloud cover, some wind and a temperature in the mid 40's.

First signs of a good day happened about a 1/4 mile down from the put in. Nice little Cutty aggressively attack my stream the instant it hit the water. I was lucky to get the hook set it happened so fast. This guy really wanted that fly!!

Posted 04-19-2012 at 01:29 PM by Hardyreels

Recently we have had some threads where members are querying streamer fishing. With all the people out there floating Indi Rigs and dropping nymphs from a big dry I still believe that to be a successful streamer fisherman is The Holy Grail of the fly fisher. I must include being a master on the dry fly to the Holy Grail club also. I think that those two styles of fly fishing; streamer & dry, are the two types of our sport that require the most dedication to master. Yes, almost anyone can catch...
