I have a guide friend who is an avid hatch matcher. He will carefully pump the stomach of the first trout he catches, and dutifully inspect the contents. He will then tie on whatever the trout he caught has been eating.

Figuring out what bugs are on the river via watching what's buzzing around me, or looking under rocks is my own preferred method! I'm not much for stomach pumping.

On the other hand, function over form says: An elk hair caddis with a dropped copper...

So, welcome to my first blog post. I have low expectations- (and so should you ).

Due to my busy work schedule, I haven't had time to fish much the last 10 days or so. Every once in a while I have these dry stretches of time, and generally it leads to a few predictable mental destinations-
1. A tendency to be more cranky and less patient in day to day stuff (I need the space the river provides me!).

2. I find myself wandering around the area of...

A Fish I Never Caught

Sunday, my fishing buddy and I headed south to fish some waters known to have my favorite species of fish, the brown trout. I was excited, especially since I hadn't caught one this year.

As we arrived a big storm with tons of thunder and flashes of lightning served up a lot of heavy rain. We decided we might take an afternoon nap to pass the time until the rains let up. It was a good plan but I never even leaned back in the seat. Sitting there looking at the water stimulated...

I'm still around but...........

I must admit that the fish guide business is demanding to say the least. I have spent every day this past week trying hard to get salmon onto the flies of people fishing with me. The days are starting with an alarm going off at 2:30 AM and I am returning home at 8 or 9 in the evenings. This is as close as I have came to having a time clock to answer to since 1988 and it is proving to be demanding work.
