The Last Trip to the Cabin Before Breakup; April 2011

Breakup, that's what Alaskans call springtime. It is a time of melting snows, ice out on the rivers and lakes and of course mud. Gravel roads and driveways get soft and you don't walk around on your lawn for a while but things eventually dry out and firm up. By April the weather can turn warm without much notice or things can stay pretty chilly and that is what makes this time of year a gamble if you intend to spend a few weeks out at the cabin. Lesson Learned!!

Well I took the cover off my boat today for the first time since November. The bottom was full of ice!! Apparently over the winter a lot of condensation builds up inside a covered boat. I spent $20.00 at the do it yourself car wash thaw most the ice out. Still some up under the raised flooring though. Have the boat in the front yard tipped up with the plugs out. The next couple of days should warm up enough with the cover on to melt whats left. Have to check it and see if I need to go...

Drove The Motorcycle to Anchorage Today;

With the cost of fuel here just a tad below $4 / gallon I have been waiting for the roads to become clear of ice so that I could begin using my bike again. Today I had a trip to Anchorage that had to be made (53 miles one way) and the temperature was at 36* so away I went. The motorcycle gets right around 50 mpg depending on how hard you turn the throttle but 50 is average. That alone makes it an attractive way to get around these days. This will provide some more insight to life in Alaska I think. If you wanna live here you better be ready to do more than fish. As a matter of fact you have be able to handle about anything or........Option #2, you better have a lot of money and I do mean a lot. The problem I am about to disclose has been on the radar here since January 27 and today is March 16'th.

This is going to be an interesting day no doubt about it and I will take a few pictures and put them into this article...
