So tired

Posted 03-16-2017 at 12:09 AM by americanzero

So tired, indeed! Purchased two hen necks today. I have hackle for drys, now I just have to figure out how to use it. Not having a teacher/mentor is a total bummer, but I would rather learn the hard way than not at all. I tied a copper midge, another SHWAPF, and what was supposed To be a hares ear. it looks more like a dragonfly emerger.

That about sums up today's adventures at the vise. I did make an EZ nymph and a SHWAPF, but that was about it. It was a long day, I'm not feeling the greatest, and tonight was just not a good night of tying. I have to figure out what I'm doing wrong with dubbing. I can't dub anything. I think I'm using too much, but time will tell. I am still having trouble with everything spinning around the hook shank. I think I need to do two or so loose wraps. I have been startin with too much tension and I...

Sometimes I feel I have to explain an occurrence and this is one of those times. This is a different type post into this blog, I will write here because only those who may have an interest in what I may have to say ever read here.

Back on the 23rd of January 2017, a member contacted me to ask advice regarding a Spey rod. I was busy getting ready for a trip to the cabin and had no time to begin writing about rods so I suggested we talk by phone. It was three days before he replied...

Materials arrive, first flies

Posted 03-14-2017 at 12:30 AM by americanzero

Well, the box came as expected! I spent about an hour taking everything out of the packages, sorting the materials bags, setting up the vise. I grabbed a 4/0 wide gap worm hook to practice on. I got thread to start, and stay, on the hook. Did a few practice whip finishes. Even tried a little dubbing.

I need a lot of practice whip finishing! I get it to work, but it takes a few tries. I also made a mistake and bought the small sized finisher. Now I wish I would have gotten a bigger...

Getting started

Posted 03-12-2017 at 12:07 PM by americanzero

I have decided to start tying flies! I was selected for a special fly trip to Montana in may, and I couldn't contain my excitement. Tomorrow all of my supplies should arrive in the mail. I ordered a few threads, some feathers, hook assortment, tools, and griffin vise. I will add pictures of the entire haul when it gets here. I plan on using some of the guides from FAOL, YouTube videos, and the nice folks here to start my learning.

A bit about me:
I was in the army for about...
