Thanks So Cal. Is Horseshoe Meadows Road paved or graded gravel. Can I make it up in my sedan or do I need a 4x4?

Paved, and a sedan will be fine. 4x4 isn't needed.

I can't think of anything more enjoyable than stalking some beautiful little brookies in a pristine mountain stream

But, after reading the "most beautiful fish" thread, I just put golden trout on my short list of fish to stalk in a pristine mountain stream

Thanks So Cal. I'm going to have to give it a try. Quite a bit closer than driving to the Mammoth area. Is there camp sites up there or do you have to find a place to stay in Lone Pine?

Yes, there's tent sites and like 1 water spigot for the area with some outhouses and bear-proof containers. I think they open at the end of May and it's first come first serve for 1 night camping so just get there somewhat early to get a spot, you should be fine though.

And yeah it's nice because it's a decent bit closer than going all the way up to Mammoth and there's some good fishing in the area.

Thanks, do you do much fishing up on the Kern River. I'm guessing it would take about the same time to get to the Kern River from the turn off on 395, as it would take to get to Lone Pine (plus the drive up Horseshoe Meadow Road). I did Google it I see the switch backs you mentioned. Must be a pretty steep grade up that road.

I fish the Kern, great river 22 miles do river access along road and many more beyond that. You can also fish the lower kern below lake Isabella. Once you get to Forks of Kern you can get golden trout.

WOW! i am really jealous some of these spots (even if they are bringing new meaning to 'small stream'), I think I need to migrate northward...
