My name is Matt and I have a brown trout addiction. I feel like I have it worse than anyone else in the world. All I do is buy flies to catch brown trout, spend most of all day everyday drooling over brown trout pics on the internet, reading about them, and occasionally actually getting to fish for them (with little success I might add). I don't live anywhere close to prime brown waters, but close enough to some with a shot in the dark chance of hooking into one. I have recently bought a book, "Brown Trout Flyfishing" by Chris Francis. I am anxiously awaiting its arrival Friday so I can begin learning more about them and how to hopefully increase my catch rate. I would say they are by far my favorite freshwater fish. AM I alone in my addiction?
What you describe is pretty typical and gets worse in winter months. Get lots of casting practice on panfish around home and don't overlook North GA. you're close there. Pick up some maps (Topo) of the Cohutta, Ravens Cliffs, and Tear Britches, Wilderness areas. Jack's River is best but I've fished all the creeks within a day hike of the tote road. On a regular map follow Rt. 2 west out of Blue Ridge and you'll find the boundry.
Ard, are you from these parts or did you just make a visit. I have done some fishing the TN tailwaters close to me, but have yet to try north GA and NC. They are both on the wishlist, but it's still a 4-5 hr drive for me. For me to spend that kind of money on gas right now and get skunked, I would hate it. So I usually like to travel to unfamiliar territory with someone who isn't! I am hoping to get up in the Smoky Mtn National Park in the next week or two with a friend and chase some brookies. Never caught one of those jewels.
There really was a twelve step program for fish addiction.
I was court ordered to attend only to find the counselor had never fished. How could he possibly know what it's like?
I informed him I couldn't trust the opinion of someone who had never been there done that, and suggested he go on a fishing trip with me, just once. In short, two days later he, in turn, took the judge fishing and the following monday the program was cancelled
Yes, I made sure there's no hope for any of us
mrl0004 i have the opposite problem of you. all i have is brown trout! and i wish i could catch other fish to appreciate what i have. i dream all day about catching red fish. that is my real passion. and soon, very soon i will be able to catch one on a fly! i wish i could move my mountains and weather back to houston so i could still fish the coast.
What? Flyfishing an addiction? Or even fly tying? NEVER!
North Georgia? Try the Sogue River thru Blackhawks's (Batesville) . If you can afford it, it was a dream come true. A once in a lifetime trip I did. Nothing was caught under 6 lbs. BTW...did I mention I broke a date with a quite attractive blonde to go blugill fishing this past Monday? Addictive? NAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Frank, I have tried fly tying and loved it! I could see it taking up a lot more time that in my current stage of life, I just don't have. What little free time I have, I like to spend it fishing. My local FFF club has tying every other Thurs. night and I go now and then, but mainly to comission ppl to tie flies for me! The life of a scientist is a hectic one, add a g/f and there isn't much free time!
@Mac, I lived on the AL coast for 2.5 yrs while doing my master's research. I caught speckled trout, redfish, and flounder til I was blue in the face. My lab was right on the beach. So I could literally walk out the back door, catch a flounder, fire up the grill, and dinner was served! The occassional cobia and black drum too!
That's just a summary. But that was before my flyfishing days and like you I long to do it all again, but on the fly this time. However, something about those brown trout just really hold a special place in my heart. Too bad I suck at catching them!

I have no idea why my pictures aren't working all of a sudden. I will try to get it fixed at lunch. The add image is different now for some reason!
