It is hard sometimes, I have plenty of photos where the fish have their heads on the waters edge and when I look at them I feel a little sheepish. I do however believe that when handling large fish, not lifting them is the proper approach if we are gonna let them go. It is good that you got as good a shot as you could otherwise we would be arguing over what it was. People have to take my word on many catches because the fish just make it clear that trying to take pictures is sort of silly. When I get a nice docile specimen I shoot away.

Nice Bull. Where can you catch these that they allow you to lift them out of the water?
I am asking because the subject was brought up on another forum and I figured you all would know the answer.

Yeah, they're our provincial fish and since no kills were put in place many years ago, the pops have rebounded with force. The place i fish for them is one of the last strong holds of bull trout in canada. The rivers fish population are just whitefish and bull trout. So the bulls get very big without any predatory competitors. The big guy was 27" and by no means big for the area. But shots at 40" bull trout have been had in this area. The guy holding the biggest one is the biologist for the area. He's put me onto some very very nice fish.

But yes. We're allowed to lift them out of the water and get our money shots...

July is the time man, if conditions allow you to fish. October can be very good too but also frosty... once the fish have recovered from spawn and start chowing on the whitefish. We're shooting our fly fishing film festival video in this area in july 2013.
