A Day on the River w/ a lovely lady in tow

I tried out a new river today for the first time and brought along a non-fisherwoman who comes from the city. The river is 2 and 1/2 hours from my door and there's a 5km hike to get to the river. Not ever trying it before I had no idea what to expect, and how in the heck I'd keep my company happy!?

On the way in we spotted fresh bear tracks, we saw a multitude of warblers, woodpeckers, and jays, spotted a great blue heron stalking the shoreline and I told the story of how fly fishers mimic blue herons when they work a shoreline. We also spotted a whitetail doe and her fawn on the other side of the river. And that was all before I even had my rod out of the tube!

Fish don't matter at this point, although I was eager to try the riffles right at the base of the hiking trail! I managed to hook up quite a few fish and only landed a handful. A couple rainbows, a few brookies, and a nice little smallmouth bass (first time I'd caught a bass in current). I saw a few hog trout and a really nice smallie that I just couldn't get a fly to. He was buried in some fallen timber. Can't wait to go back knowing there's some lunkers in there, including some nice browns!

My friend who came along is a photographer and part of the deal was, she was to take pictures of me and I'd take her to a sweet beach nearby and buy her ice cream. Ya...I didn't have to think to hard about that one!

So at the end of my fishing which was about two hours during high noon of the day, we ventured over to the beach for her end of the bargain. Yes, I said her end of the bargain.

Hahaha. She's a good friend of mine and I made sure to send her the report with pics before I posted.

Was a very fun day and she was easy to look after compared to some city slicker females! Just don't mention the word "wood tick" and everything's golden.
