Default favorite gear?

One of the things I love about fly fishing is all the gear I get to buy and use.

I was just wondering what everyone considers their favorite one or two pieces of gear...you know, something that makes your life easier or makes your trip more fun and you are always glad to have when you hit the water. It could be clothing, a knot tying tool, your best all-around fly, a great vest, best fly box, etc.

Mine is a pair of breathable waist-high waders. I bought them about two years ago and have never been sorry I don't have those uncomfortable, hot, rediculous chest waders. I don't know why they are not more popular. Sometimes I think my height (I'm 6'3") makes them a little more practical for me, but then again I once remember an old fly fisherman tell me that if your standing in knee high water, you're standing in the fish. Plus, if you value your life you should probably avoid chest deep river crossings in waders anyway.

What about for everyone else? If you had to give up all your gear one piece at a time, what would you be last to give up (Rod and reel excluded)?

Besides rods/reels I think my favorite item is my Filson Guide Vest. I had been using the same vest for over 10 years and it was finally giving up the ghost. When I started looking at vests for the first time in many years I was surprised how little room the new ones have, plus most were a little too high-tech looking for me. It seems there is a push to only carry one or two fly boxes these days, but I have a system that works for me and I usually carry four boxes. Got the new Filson vest and love it. Traditional looking and it holds all of my boxes, plus very rugged.

I like my Simms sling pack. I find it more functional than a fanny pack and cooler than my old vest, both in terms of temp and style Besides that I'd say furled leader. Love casting it, easy to switch tippet sizes. From April - October I don't use waders, just water shoes and shorts, after that I like the chest waders. One of these years I'll get a good pair of wading shoes - good traction but less clunky than my wading boots.

I agree on the waist high waders. Far more comfortable and they keep me from wading deeper than I should at my age. I don't find them limiting at all. If these wear out, I'm going to buy a pair that has the front zipper and hand pockets. The other item I love is my wading staff. I never wade without it.

2 things for me :

My chest pack (Fishpond), easier to carry than a fishing vest, ligther, and more practical. When you take a "bath", it dries in few minutes.

The new waterproof fly boxes (from Allen, Fiswest, ect...), aslo cause if you get in the water, the flies remains dry.

Vintage RPL GLF Sage Rod was my Dad's. And an old canvas postal letter carriers bag for my fishing kit. These two make my fishin days better.
