Default What's best way to upsize a leader?

I bought some 9' long 12#, 16#, and 20# Umpqua fluorocarbon Big Game leaders to cast some hefty leech patterns with a 10wt for Salmon. If I use the recommended 2/3 fly line diameter for the leader's butt section, I should use a leader with a .026"-.027" but diameter. All of the Umpqua leaders have a .021"-.022" butt.

I was thinking of doing two things:

- getting some 40#-50# fluoro leader, add 2' to the butt of my Umpqua
leaders and then trim 2' off the tip end,

- or just trim 2' off the tip end to stiffen the leader up abit.

But I read somewhere that "stiff" and "butt diameter" are two different things. Any direction would be appreciated, thanks.

What you're actually looking for is for your leader butt end to have the same degree of flexibility as the level tip of the line.
This keeps the connection from hinging. The diameter itself makes no difference.
You're probably over thinking this

You can check just by flexing them, but I'd guess that you're good to go already
Only if they're greatly dissimilar will you ever notice a difference
