First time using a furled leader and have a question

I just got a furled leader from Cutthroat Leaders. It has a loop on it. My fly line doesn't. What is the best way to connect my leader to my line?

There are several ways of doing this but this is what I prefer:

If you have it, nail know a piece of 20lb Amnesia (usually red) to end of the fly line. Make a loop on the other end of the Amnesia so the entire piece is about 3-4" long when finished. I use a Perfection Loop as it's easy to tie and it stays in-line with the rest of the line.

If you don't have Amnesia, you could use some 15 or 20lb Mono. I like Amnesia because it can act as a natural strike indicator.

Thanks, I like the idea of the colored line. I don't have any but will stopping at a fly shop tomorrow on the way to Michigan.

Glad I could of some help.

Remember that Amnesia is not the easiest thing to tie knots in. I recommend a Nail Knot tool to assist in this.

When doing the Perfection Loop, make sure you use your hemo's to make sure it's tight.

Good luck.

Use the nail less nail knot. Instructions below. Coat the knot with Pliobond cement so that it will not hang up on the tip top guide.

Axle's suggestion is a great, standard method and will work for your furled leader.

You can also make a loop in your fly line by simply folding in back and then whipping the overlap (about 3/16 - 1/4") with tying thread and hitting it with some flex cement or zap-a-gap. If you are fly tyer you already have everything you need and won't have to buy 20 yds. of mono that you'll only use 4" of. There are tutorials on youtube with tips on how to keep the overlap slim.

You can buy loops to put on your fly line at most fly shops or large outdoor retailers.

You can purchase tips for your line at most fly shops or retailers. That's what I would do.

That is the knot I generally use. It is super easy to tie and has worked great for me.

Use whatever knots you feel the most comfortable tying. If on the off chance you already had a leader connected to your line, just clip it back and add a loop to the end of the existing leader butt.

Have fun in Michigan! This is a great time of the year to be fishing.
