Default Fly fishing with a crawfish. Strike indicator?

I'm not new to fly fishing, but I'm going to fish the eleven point river in Missouri. They guys I'm going with do not fly fish, but fish with a hard bodied crawfish. My question is if I get a crawfish fly, should I fish it below a strike indicator? I have never used a crawfish pattern before.
Thanks!!

From my understanding you fish it like a woolly bugger, so you can but it is not necessary.

You can dead drift it with the occasional twitch.
You can fish it like a steamer down and across and strip it back in.
A indi might get in the way of presentation but it wont hurt you.
Tie on a black woolybugger and off the hook bend tie in 24" of tippet and tie on your crawfish. Double your chances. I always fish my buggers in tandem varying colors.

This...two is almost always better than one. Double up and let them fly. Two-fly rigs are very effective.

Whenever I have fished crawfish patterns for bass in creeks, I weight it fairly heavily and hop it across the bottom. No indicator. Short strips; strip, strip, pause, repeat.

That said, I'm sure drifting with an indicator could be productive under the right conditions.

Maybe a sinking line depending on flow and depth.

Very versatile, experiment & find out where the fish are & what they want.

One of my go-to flies for smallies & rainbows is a big honey/olive sparkle bugger that I'm sure passes as a crayfish at least a lot of the time.

As others posted, the dead drift under an indicator, the swing, and the short bottom hops all work. So does stripping downstream in the faster water, i.e. where a current tongue runs into a pool -- out of control crayfish getting tumbled in the current, etc.

With the bottom hop thing -- really slow can be very effective. Tiny tugs, 1-2 inches at a time. Tug. Pause. Tug Tug. ----- PAUSE ---- . tug . tug . ....................... pause .................. tug tug tug

+1 on the buggers. It would probably be very effective to tie/use a dark orange colored bugger. that is how I imitate crawfish for smallies back home. I can see it would work there too.
