Hey Kglissmeyer, what's the recipe for those flies, they look really good and I would like to try a few out.

The past few years my favorite winter pattern is Pat Dorsey's Top Secret Midge #20-#26. Really easy to tie also. Just purchased a half dozen of the Little Green Machine Pheasant tails recommended by colotrout. We'll have to see if it makes the list next year. Looks like a good fly.

Other Favs Include:

Barr's Slumpbuster
Poison Tung
Barr's Tung Teaser
Rojo Midge
Rainbow Warrior

Kelly: Thanks for posting the recipes to your flies! That should keep me busy for awhile! Good luck tomorrow with the ankle!

I find in winter you have to have a fly that will attract the attention of a fish rather than one that tries to imitate. They also have to be slightly large than normal to make the fish want move to attack it. Some good attractors are the Alaskabou patterns. The marabou body moves in the water on the retrieve and pause suggests that it is alive and swimming.

On the same principle a marabou muddler minnow has worked well for me in the past.

For deeper water a woolly bugger with marabou tail and dumbell eyes gets to the right location.
