Default What were your top 10 trout flies that worked in 2010

Think back to last years fishing trips. What flies in your fly box caught fish. Can you produce a list of your top 10 flies. The hook size and where you used them.

This exercise will help other fly fishermen and Ladies visiting different locations. It is always hard to know what to pack.

I did most of my fishing on the South Platte in one place or another last year.
The top three flies that caught the most fish were of my own design, which were merely tweaks to old patterns.

1. E.T. a tan midge with clear bead head ribbed with red wire. sizes 20-22
2. Chartreuse caddis larva made with micro tubing, peacock herl, and black bead head.
3. Jumping Black Flash. A new thing I've only fished since September, but kicks trout butt. sizes 20-24
4. Orange bead head caddis pupa. size 18
5. My BWO dry fly made with wings cut from computer screen protective foam size20
6. Zebra midge in black. size 20-24
7. Black cone head wooley bugger size 6-10
8. Grey and black JuJu beatis size 18-22 a Charlie Craven pattern
9. parachute adams size 20-24
10. RSII gray size 20-22

summers I fish a bit from Lone Pine to Bridgeport in the E Sierra, both streams and still waters. In winter, Trinity Steelhead and central valley tailwaters in Ca. In Bold are the "go to" bugs.

olive matulka
olive, black or seal bugger (#10-12)
SJ Worm (#10-12)
Assorted PTs (bh, pb, etc) (#14-18)
assorted copper johns (#12-18)
rs2 (20 or smaller)
zebra midge (#18-22)

Hi vis Adams (#14-16)
Griffith's gnat (#18-22)
BWO (#16 and smaller)

Not a very exciting list, but it works for me...-Mike

1. Hi Vis Para Adams
2. Renegade
3. Royal Coachman
4. Wooly Bugger-Olive/Grizzly
5. Foam Hoppers
6. Copper John's-red
7. Mosquito
8. Ants-black
9. Damsel Nymph

The hottest flies for me last year were the Foam Hoppers. Interesting how many times foam patterns have won the "Jackson One Fly" contest too.

I'll go with the top 6, like J-P, but one more for good measure; these are for Trout:

1. Parachute Adams (#14-18)
2. Cream Elk hair Caddis (#14-16)
3. Stewart's Black Spider (#14)
4. Chernobyl Ant (#10)
5. Red Copper John (#14)
6. Olive/Black Wooly Bugger (#8)

Nice flies, Kelly!

Default Re: What were your top 10 trout flies that worked in 2010

I get a lot of samples from fly company reps. Here are the five sample flies that I did well with during 2010.

1. Jimmy Legs Stonefly
2. Kevin Price's Pacifier
3. Sloan's Mighty May
4. Taylor's Fat Albert
5. Grillos' Sideshow Bob

Here are some patterns that I used regularly with success.

6. Hale Bop Leech
7. Woolly Bugger
8. Royal Wulff
9. Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear Nymph
10. Anderson's Bird of Prey

Honorable Mentions
11. Mercer's Micro May
12. Wier's Whopper
13. Hogan's Hangin' Stimulator
14. Royal Trude
15. Sheep Creek Special

MP

Edit: Kind of kicking myself because I did mention the fly that caught me the most trout for 2010. It is a simple Partridge and Olive (or tan, orange, peacock, black) soft hackle wet fly.
