I bought a book - Handbook of Hatches - I learned a lot, (probably more that I wanted too!) but it contains some very good info and being a newbie I read everything I can get my hands on.

Try embroidery floss. Again, it's cheaper than dubbing, available more places, and easier to use. I bought a bunch years ago when I was actually in practice at tying, intended to use for more compact bodies when I finally got serious about dry fly mayfly imitations.

BTW, IME floss is usually packaged in a two-strand wind. For fly tying you'll only want one strand at a time, so be sure to pull them apart before you cut off what you need for a given fly.

Now, lo, it's 7 years later and I skipped five years tying, I'm back to midge nymphs for a little bit until I get my chops back
