Ok, seeing as my fly fishing buddies are basically non-existent I have had to make my wife my friend and coincidentally my fishing partner. She has been taking to things really well. One of my favorite ways to fish is from a float tube, on moving water. So for her birthday I got her a new float tube...screw the still water it was on to the river.

We have a crew and they were not at all excited for us to go without them. So I threw in a boat. Except for the occasional 500 mile per hour upstream bursts of wind, rowing wasn't bad.

Separation anxiety from Piper set in quickly and so mom got her little girl in her lap..like it or not.

Fishing was insane in the dirty water. The kids were a huge fan base for every fish caught! Seemed like every fish we hooked was quality.

Fixed momma up with a Woolly Bugger and gave her a few pointers and sent her down a grassy bank. The fish were hitting like freight trains and as I watched her throw into a good rif under an overhanging shrub, the surface swirled and the fish engulfed her bugger and turned and ran hard. Love those suicidal Browns!

The fishing remained incredible through the entire float. Off colored water allows you to fish short casts and keep the fly in the zone. We could not count all of these little guys, they were en fuego.

Had a great day on the water with the whole crew. Moderately sun burnt and now sportin a new float tube savvy wooly bugger woman to hit the Green with. 2 weeks...and counting.

Happy Fathers Day to all you dads!

loaded up the camper and grabbed my better half and headed off for cold flowing water. 99 big ones on the thermo on the way out of town...I wont miss you! When we hit the high valley the Fork was blown so it was onto the Pan!

We headed up high for a good camp site away from the heat and the people. Before long we were picking out camp sites and marveling at how much water was in the rivers and streams. Run-Off is in full tilt! We had to go to 10k before we found clear and low enough water on the creek system we were in.

Normally the h2o is too low to fish this area of the creek but now it is deep and fast. The usually skiddish and fearful browns that inhabit the cutbanks of this little gem are wary predators that rarely let you make a mistake without bolting away for an hour to wait for you to kindly move on. Today they were reachable.

Ruth managed a first fish only a few minutes into it. These pretty browns are wild-wild and a pleasure to catch.

The next morning we headed down to the big river. Flows are lower on the river as they are trying to fill the reservoir above. The river started off with a bang! Ruth wanted to work more on her nymphing and so we set up in a nice drift hole.

This is kinda what it looked like all over the dadgum river.

As I was sitting in my river chair tying up my rod, Ruth hollers that she has a fish on. I look down and she has hooked a 25-plus inch rainbow and the fish is absolutely freaking out. 20-50 foot spurts that were done in blazing speed.

long story short. fish got off after a 10 minute fight. She was just delighted...we let em go anyways, that was easy....I am in shock. She is calm and cool. I just rolled my eyes and walked back up to the hole.

She tells me to get in and cast a minute as she was gonna play with the pup. I threw up and mended and instantly my indicator tears off to the side, fish on. Holy smokes, it is another giant rainbow...only 22-23 this time, but man what a fish. I am giving chase down the bank of this brutal jagged rock river telling myself I have to touch this fish.

Yes....you guessed it. It came off. Here's the look of Agony and Defeat.

Mentally wrecked from seeing two of the biggest rainbows we have hooked in the lower river in a long time make us feel like rookies.

Time for some grub. Rejuvenate and move down for some pocket water dry fly fishing. I tied on a Stimmy and a Royal Wulf. Let's make this fun and productive.

Ruth is always with here trusty friend...sometimes more of a hindrance than a help but always near.

She loves fishing too...

We managed a good lot of fish on the surface and it just made the day to see those tremendous top water hits!!

Steep hike out, long ride home. Dog is dog tired...so are we.

Fish On!

Woolly Buggers for Trout

Woolly buggers became one of my favorite trout flies over the last week. Recent rain meant water clarity was poor. A bigger offering that was easier for trout to locate was just what they wanted.
Woolly buggers became one of my favorite trout flies over the last week. Recent rain meant water clarity was poor. A bigger offering that was easier for trout to locate was just what they wanted.

One of the best things about woolly buggers is how versatile they are. They can be drifted, stripped, twitched, swung, and fished down and across. They’re effective in sizes 2-12. You can catch stocker trout or big wild fish.

Everyone knows that big brown trout are nocturnal predators, but I’d never fished for trout at night before. Thirty minutes into throwing black beaded woolly buggers on one of my favorite Driftless Area streams had me hooked. Detecting the strike isn’t much of an issue. The first one I caught gave a violent take just under the surface. The second 16″+ brown trout charged my drifting bugger. You don’t have to worry about setting the hook.

The next day I found myself on a portion of stream I’d never fished. It was known for big browns. The water was murky, and I knew I’d have to throw something they could find. After swinging a #4 olive woolly bugger over a downed tree I hit a snag. Nope, big brown trout. I caught two more within 10 minutes, and would pull several more good sized wild trout out of the stretch. The success I had on those two outings gave me the confidence to keep slinging buggers for the next five days. I’m glad I did because I caught a lot more trout, and the ones I caught were bigger than average.
