Hello all -
So, I'm looking at getting a new rod. A friend of mine gets TFO pro deals so I was going to order one through him, and I figured I might as well go with the BVK series. The only hangup here is that I've only every used his little baby 4 weight for fishing some really creeky little area streams, etc.

So, here's the question:

This will be my only rod as my old one is toast. The overwhelming majority of the fishing I do is on smaller mountain rivers but I occasionally get on the Yellowstone, the Madison, etc. (in Montana).

I'm debating between a 5wt and a 6wt - any thoughts there? I'm leaning toward a 5wt, but don't want to get frustrated on bigger rivs.

Thanks again,
-Alex

Redington predator for smallies and st criox high stick drifter

Considering a 7 ft predator in a six weight for smallies. Will it throw a size 2 streamer well at that weight is the question. Also was wondering if anyone had used a high stick drifter and if so what weight and length?

Favorite Streamer Rods?

I am finding myself fishing a lot more streamers on medium sized western rivers (i.e. Bighorn, Yellowstone, Missouri, Green, Snake, etc.). Some of the newer, big (and sometimes heavy) streamer patterns and fast sinking sink-tip lines really seem to overtax a 6wt rod.

Some of the newer, big (and sometimes heavy) streamer patterns and fast sinking sink-tip lines really seem to overtax a 6wt rod.

Been fishing/testing several 7wts and a couple of 8 wts. Haven't quite found nirvana yet, some too stiff, some too soft, some just ok. Probably will find a rod or two that I will get along with eventually. Actually, it is kind of fun trying different stuff.

I have tried the following during my search ( some just casting, some fishing and casting):

Ross Essence RX 790-4
Echo Edge SW - 790-4
Echo 3 SW - 890-4
Echo Edge 84 - 8'4", #7
G. Loomis GLX - #7, 9', 2pc
G. Loomis Shorestalker - 8'6", #7
G. Loomis Native Run - 9'6", #7
G. Loomis NRX - 9', #7
Sage VXP - 790-4
Sage One - 796-4
Sage Xi3 - 790-4
Sage Xi3 - 890-4
Sage Smallmouth Bass - 7'10" (can't remember exact grain wt)

What are some of the favorite rods from others on this forum for this type of fishing? I'm interested to hear about your experiences and preferences.

Cheers!

Hi there,

I'm toying with picking up a striper rod. I was considering a complete outfit from Orvis because they're currently on sale and good quality, but their warranty is only for a year (I think - correct me if I'm wrong).

I like the idea of a lifetime warranty for this kind of expense, especially since I snapped a Cabela's rod last year!

Any suggestions? I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible while not buying junk, and an outfit seems the best way to do so.

Thanks!

Has anyone used the new Wright MCGill 10 foot 4 wt rod. I just got one as a gift and it comes with a detachable fighting butt which appears to turn it into a switch rod. Any information, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
