It sounds like your progress is strong and enviable. 30' can be tough, because this isn't actually what the rod/line was designed to do. A 5wt rod is designed to cast 30' of 5wt line, resulting in a 37'-40' cast.
When you are casting only 20' of line and 8' of leader, things change a bit. You will have to cast like-a-girl/daintily/whatever you want to call it to present the fly effectively at this distance. Try focusing on what you are feeling in the top two fingers of your casting hand, instead of your whole casting arm.

Just fish more, then read up, go fishing again, read more, ask more, and then fish some more. Keep doing that and have as much fun as you can and you will get better and better. Oh yeah and learn to cast "daintily," as Cliff says
