Air sucking carp?

Yesterday I went to a large shallow lake an fished for and caught my first carp. The one I landed looked about 8 lbs and was a blast to land on my 6 wt rod. The carp displayed several different forms of behavior one of which I didn't understand. I observed carp feeding with their backs out of the water which were fun to stalk. I saw one carp leap from the water completely extended either flying or chasing a dragon fly?? The most pecular behavior was when I would find a pod of 5 or 6 fish bunched up swimming in a small 3 foot area with their mouth out of the water sucking air...What do your think they were doing as they would not take a fly while sucking air. The fish I did get to take were the ones feeding in shallow water..I hooked 4 and landed one. Great afternoon.

Re: Air sucking carp?

over the years i've seen many a carp with their mouths out of the water and sucking air. i've never heard or been told what this is about so i'm kind of curious to hear the answer. i've never hooked into a carp on the fly i've caught one on a beetle spin years ago. my dad couldn't believe it. he never thought that they'd hit a lure. i've caught many that way. both on ultra-lite and medium action rods.

Re: Air sucking carp?

They do that here all the time. They are actually eating. They suck in particles floating in the film of the water.

I am still trying to get over the fact that you are holding one of those slimey bastards. Yes they are fun to catch, but holding them is like sticking your hands in a bucket of snot.
