i've been fishing for a while but want to learn to fly fish. what do you think i should get.

It's been a few years since I purchased a combo. I'm looking right now ot a couple of Orvis combos to use as client rods. Thinking about the clearwater 5wt & 6wt. I've never regretted buying from Orvis.

Make sure the Cabela's outfit your looking for is in stock. A lot of their combo's are on backorder.

thats the only gripe I have with Cabela's.....seems like 3/4 of everything I order is backordered

I really like the Cabela's Three Forks rod over the others you listed. My first fly rod was a Three Forks 6 wt with a CSR 2 reel. I don't think they sell that reel anymore. I still have that outfit and use it when people go with me and need to borrow some gear. I just purchased an 8-1/2 ft 5 wt with a Prestige reel as a first combo for my nephew.

Just got an Echo Classic 8' 4wt 4 piece rod for the wife and I could not tell a difference from the daughters 8' 4wt 4 piece St. Croix using the same line and reel on both rods, but I got to say I like the Green color better. For now I have an Okuma Sierra 4wt reel for the wifes rod.

Just to confess, I prefer to see other retailers posted instead of Cabelas, cuz I don't think the Big Boys need any help.

On the other hand, I have seen VERY FEW comments posted documenting examples of Cabelas not taking care of their customers. So I guess that makes me "conflicted"- wanting the little guys to have a chance, but impressed with a big dog for taking good care of the avg customer.

I guess my version of the ideal situation is to buy products made by a smaller US Mfg that Cabela's happens to sell so you get the best of both worlds, instead of buying direct from the MFG.

But that's your call.

Is there a Cabelas or fly shop near enough that you can try some rods? Most
fly rods I've seen are pretty nice. Some are very good, and a few are exceptional. I did see an Ugly Stick brand fly rod last night at a chain
sporting goods store, and that was exceptioanlly bad.

The important things are: get a rod in the correct weight and length for your
intended use (close is close enough). I'd get a 9' or 8'6" 5wt. Buy a rod that
costs at least $125, and chances are it's going to be just fine. You can pay less and still get a nice rod, but you have to look at them closely. Buy a reel
that will hold line and 100 yards of backing. I like Okuma SLV reels at the
moment, and you want one that doesn't fall apart/wobble/grind/etc. Buy a
nice line: Cortland 444 peach, SA Mastery Trout, or Rio Classic.

We all have favorite rods and rod companies, so finding a consenus will be
difficult. Having a shop of some sort nearby would be great, as long as they
don't carry high-end only. If you have to go mail-order, try the Orvis Clearwater that Davo mentioned above. Buy an Orvis reel to go along with
it, and one of the lines mentioned. Then practice casting, or take some lessons. Finally, (but not too long after) go fishing !
