Deconstructing Fly Rod

Hey folks,

I thought I would get your take on this. I see that there have been a few posts about getting rod sections to stick together so they do not come loose while playing a fish -- something I have never had a problem wtih, but I have the opposite problem with my 3 piece Winston 3 wt.

I can not get middle section detached from the first section (reel seat section) no matter how I try to turn the pieces. I am terrified of breaking the rod, especially if I try holding on to the eyelets to hard.

Any suggestions?!?!

Warmest wishes,

Fisherman Who Wants to Travel!

Crunchbird,

Check the "eating your ferrules" thread in this same General Discussion forum, which has some suggestions for just this problem. Your fear of twisting the stuck sections by the guides is real; I've heard of many who have broken their rods doing so. I personally have used the "behind-the-knees" suggestion of Joe D, which in my experience works better after icing down the stuck ferrule joint. Using a pair of rubber gloves for non-slip gripping also helps.

Hi Crunchbird,

Fly2Fish has given you some good advise but I couldn't find the thread he refereed to. So here is another thread dealing with getting your ferrules apart. I also like the rod-behind-the-legs method to separate the rod sections.

Frank

Here's the link to the seating your ferrules thread (I had left out the first letter), but the link Frank has provided has even more tips on separating seized ferrules.

Re: Deconstructing Fly Rod

Take a baggie full of ice. Put it on the male ferrule end. It should be enough to shrink it and gently pull it apart. Or if your freezer is big enough put it in it for 15 minutes or so. Use the behind the legs pull. A Winston doesn't need to be forced together. If you have the internal spiggot ferrules, wipe the male ferrule on your nose. Use your body oil to help with the assembly of the rod. Slight twist to line up the guides. Pull it apart the same way.
