Ever break your Fly Rod ?

Just curious as to how many of you have broken a fly rod ?
Somehow one of mine broke on a float trip this past Saturday.
( My 10'-7wt Thomas & Thomas. I was smallmouth fishing )

Second question : Do you, or have you ever had any trouble
getting a replacement for a lifetime warranty fly rod ?

After I returned home Saturday I took it up to my Fly Shop &
it be sent out today to see what the manufacturer says.

Have you had any experience with this type of incident ?

Re: Ever break your Fly Rod ?

Broke my 5 wt. Orvis on a fishing trip last summer. As luck would have it, it was the last day and I was only planning on fishing the late afternoon rise. When I got home, I packaaged the rod and shipped it to Orvis. Three weeks later a brand new rod showed up on my front porch. No questions.

Re: Ever break your Fly Rod ?

Yes, I just broke about 5" off my St. Croix 5wt. last Friday. Mine fly rod is about 15 years old. With no receipt or serial number. I e-mailed St. Croix, Friday night when I got home, and had a reply when I woke up Monday morning. It seems most fly rod companys do what they can to correct the problem quickly. This is the second St. Croix that has broken on me. I think I may go with another brand next time.

Kick back and wait for your like new rod. Some take longer than others, but we have never had a problem.

Re: Ever break your Fly Rod ?

I just broke the tip off my TFO, so I took it to Sportsmen's warehouse, they sent it back with $25. from me. I got it back last weeke and it took close to a month, But I kinda figure it is the time of year.
I know at Orvis, they do tell the customer that summer takes a little longer (or late Spring) due to the fact that, that seems to be when everyone is fishing and a lot get broken.
I have sent rods back in the fall and gotten them replaced in 10 days.

Re: Ever break your Fly Rod ?

I have broken three but all because of my own stupidity.

I broke an old Cortland rod by jerking on a snag in the river. DUH!

A Redington by seeing how far I could bend it. DOUBLE DUH!

And an Orvis by leaving the van doors open in a windstorm and leaning the rod up against where the doors close, again, in a windstorm, SLAM! DUH DUH DUH!!!!

I have never had any issue with a rod when I actually use it how they are intended.

Re: Ever break your Fly Rod ?

If you fish much, the inevitable broken rod will occur. It's just math and statistics. I've broken probably half a dozen, some my fault some not. I just return from Baja, and my dad's new spinning rod broke on probably a 1/2 pound fish, and he wasn't even fighting the fish. Obviously something was goofy.

If you are the original owner of the rod, you should have no problem in getting the rod repaired under warranty. More and more companies are becoming stickier about adhering to the formal rod warranty criteria (typically the original purchaser is the person warranted). If not, at worst they'll charge you a nominal fee for the repair, a much lesser cost than getting a new rod.

Re: Ever break your Fly Rod ?

I also broke an Orvis rod once and they fixed it in a timely manner. Now that's good customer service!
