Re: Fire Line for backing?

Riptide---that might be a compromise solution for me since the 1500 yd powerpro was around 120 bucks---im not as worried about breakage as i am about cutting because its so small of a diameter.

Re: Fire Line for backing?

I've tried using braid for backing, at first thought it seemed like a good idea. With the right knots it's possible to use without cutting your fly line too, and if you have the right guides on your rod that shouldn't be a problem either, but rarely will you ever need that much backing, even on big tarpon.

I fish primarily with a 9wt, and I use 30lb dacron.

Here's a tip for those who want to spool any type of reel with braid, without adding mono first to prevent slipping. Put a piece of tape on the reel first. I use 3M peel-n-stick tape that's actually made for using as non-slip on steps, and it works great. I cut it into narrow strips; how narrow depends on the reel.

Teflon pipe thread tape works well too...
