Flat Thread

I have been using Danvilles 70 Denier Flymaster 6/0 waxed. (I'm a novice fly person fishing and tying) So far I've only been tying Closure Minnows and streamers and an occasion midge.
I picked up some Danvilles 210 denier flat waxed nylon more by mistake than for any other reason and don't like it. I don't think I'm using it right. It doesn't whip finish quit as the 70 denier. It doesn't cinch up like I'm used to. Does it have some special place?
Tom

Re: Flat Thread

Hi TnTom,

I use flat thread most of the time in my tying. I keep it twisted up (which it naturally does as you tie) most of the time unless I want the extra surface area for something like covering the hook shank or some material. I'll also use it flat for tying in flat materials like tinsel sometimes. When I want to flatten the thread I just let the bobbin hang until the thread untwists and flattens out.

Try spinning your bobbin around and watch how it affects the thread to see the difference.

I hope that helps.

Re: Flat Thread

Makes sense. I'll try that. Used it a little today before I read your reply. I'll try it again with a twist.
Thanks
Tom

Re: Flat Thread

Hi Tom,

I forgot to mention, twist clockwise to increase twist, and counterclockwise to remove twist. Also, when you have the thread flat it can be a lot easier to tie on material as the thread is limp and you can easily make a loop around material without it twisting.
