Fly line selection

In considering the purchase of new line I am bewildered by the variety of products out there. Warm water lines, cold water lines, various head and taper lengths- I have a day job and just can' do all the research. I want one WFF line to serve well under various conditions. My primary rig under consideration is a 7wt rig. I will use it for lake and river bass, some trout (this is not my primary trout rig). I really don't care if it cost $60 or $12 so long as it does does the job well.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Re: Fly line selection

Hi FDThomas,

No one has responded so I will give it a try. A little more information may have gotten you more replies. Since you are talking mostly Bass you can forget the cold water/warm water rated lines. These lines are for the extremes of Tropical or Arctic fishing.

A 7wt with a bass taper would be a good choice for you. If your lake fishing is in deep water you might consider a sink-tip line. The most useful line will be a Bass taper WFF line.

SA Bass line

Bass Bug

Specialty Taper
Applications:
  • Delivers large flies, bass bugs, and poppers smoothly and with greater accuracy
  • Excels in windy conditions
  • Coating excels in warm water
Taper characteristics:
  • Powerful head turns over big flies in heavy wind
  • Longer front taper provides smoother casts than other bass bug tapers
  • Longer rear taper provides greater line control and accuracy than other bass bug tapers
Core:
  • Braided multifilament nylon with optimum air entrapment for minimum memory, maximum floatation
Coating:
  • Specially formulated 3M PVC integrated with patented AST – Advanced Shooting Technology
Rio also makes a Bass line. It has a shorter rear taper than the SA line and has a loop on the front end. I don't think that SA has upgraded their Bass Bug to a front loop. Rio line has the new Agent X coating on the tip. One thing I dislike about the SA line is the color.

Either line would be a good choice.

Frank

Re: Fly line selection

Here's a helpful tool. Fly Line Selector

The Headstart line is like their bass bug line, but cheaper (bout $35)Headstartâ„¢

My favorite is the Distance line: Expert Distance It works really well for mending, roll casting, and carrying line in the air.

If you'd rather be able to load the rod easily and shoot line for distance, the Bass Bug or Headstart line would be best.
