Re: It's hot! What to wear under waders?

I never wade without waders. It doesn't matter how hot or cold it is. I've waded in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. It's that I feel very comfortable in waders. In the heat of summer I'll wear a pair of polypropelene underwear and a regular shirt. I just follow the laws of thermodynamics. Heat goes to cold. I guess I don't like to be uncomfortable while I fish. In the winter and depending on the outside temp, I'll usually layer 3 pair of underwear. Poly followed by 2 pair of fleece. The same for the chest area. A fleece hat and fleece collar. For gloves, just the simple fingerless type. I remmember wading several years ago when it was 20 degrees out and the water temp was 50, a guy stopped and yelled at me; "aren't you cold", I replied "no". He said, "you may not be cold, but your'e crazy." Granted I may sweat a little when it's really hot, but after open heart surgery I do feel the cold more than ever and just like to be comfortable in my dotage. Hope this helps. Silver Doc

Re: It's hot! What to wear under waders?

This year was the first time I've wet waded since'95 in Cheesman Canyon in Co. Then the water was pretty cold but I just sucked it up and fished. This year I was in Yellowstone in August and it was quite comfortable as long as the sun was out and it wasn't too blustery. Matter of fact, I didn't even use my waders in 6 days of fishing. I'm finding out this summer that wearing those very thin synthetic fishing pants is more comfortable than shorts! Seems that the pants keep the sun from my legs, I still sweat, but the material wicks very well and it protects my skin from some pretty nasty bugs. When wet wading you can use neoprene booties with the boots and some neoprene skirts that seal your boots at the calf to keep sand and debris out of your booties. I don't unzipp the lower legs as that is also protection from bugs and dirt. If you must wear waders wear those thin synthetic pants that North Face, Columbia, Simms makes. You don't have to change and they dry so fast by the time you get into town they're already dry.

Re: It's hot! What to wear under waders?

I'd just wear swimming shorts and leave the waders at home. I have no idea how people can wear waders in the middle of summer. Yes it can be more convenient to have everything dry, but waders are so hot. Plus, if it's a really hot day, getting your legs wet can feel really nice. Then again, I don't think I've ever waded in 45 degree water in the summer. Does it really get that cold in tailwaters? wow.

i wear breathables with a pair of tube socks and shorts. I wear the socks cause my old waders were rubber and with only shorts sometimes you would get a razor burn like rash on legs.

The streams I wade in seldom get warmer than 52 degrees in the middle of summer. 30-40's the rest of the year. Levi's
